Executive Recruiter Brett Stevens Runs for Life - Part I

Brett Stevens, president of the SearchLogix Group is on a quest. On October 7, 2007, he will attempt to do what few would believe a 44 year old, executive recruiter could do. He and 44,999 other participants from around the world will try to run for 26.2 miles in one day, in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. Now, I don’t know why the other participants are subjecting themselves to such a physically exhausting feat, but I do know why Brett feels compelled to do it.

Brett is running to raise money to save men from dying a painful death from prostate cancer. Brett is part of the Prostate Foundation’s “Athletes for a Cure” program.

About Athletes for a Cure

Athletes for a Cure is a fundraising and awareness program to assist individual athletes in their quest to raise money for better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. Athletes for a Cure is a community of people who have become part of the solution. Participation in the program is a way to multiply one person’s sense of accomplishment into a cure for millions of men.

Personally, I knew little about prostate cancer, before I discussed it with Brett earlier today. Curious about why he chose to raise money for the Prostate Foundation, I asked Brett if he knew of anyone who had prostate cancer. Sadly, he answered my question by saying “Yes, several”. What he told me next shocked me.

Facts about Prostate Cancer

  • Over 280,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1 year
  • Each year 27,000 men die from prostate cancer.
  • 1 man dies every 20 minutes from prostate cancer.

Brett-Training.jpgThis year will be the first time that Brett Stevens will participate in the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon, although this year’s event marks the marathon’s 30th anniversary.

Can a middle aged executive recruiter from Atlanta, endure the physical exhaustion of running 26 miles in one day? Stay tuned to the Daily Recruiter for updates on Brett’s progress, the good, the bad, and the ugly!

If you would like to help Brett raise money for this worthy cause, please visit his donation page on the Athletes for a Cure website. You can make an online donation there or print out a form if you prefer to mail in your contribution. Brett has set a goal of raising $5,000 for the Prostate Foundation. As of today, he has raised $800.00. By donating to Brett’s run for a cure, you can play an active role in saving men’s lives. And the best part is….he’ll do all the running! :)

Registration for the LaSalle Bank Chicago marathon has officially closed at 45,000 participants, so if you want see Brett run, you’ll have to run along the sidelines. But, if you have a camera handy, take some photos (even if you can’t find Brett) and submit them to The LaSalle Bank. If your photo is one of those selected for this year’s event it will be featured on their 30th anniversary poster. They are also accepting photos of previous year’s events. Go to the LaSalle Bank Marathon website for more details about the photo contest and about this year’s marathon.
