How to Move Up The Corporate Ladder: Think Like A Recruiter !

If you’re looking for an executive level management position, you’re not alone. Every day, companies receive hundreds of  cover letters and resumes from job candidates. If you’re serious about landing a great new job, you need to find an edge over your competition. How do you do that? Think like a recruiter!

Executive level recruiters know what companies want; you should too. Before you ask a company to hire you, you should know what recruiters know!

Companies want to know the “Bottom Line”.

  • Can this candidate save the company money? Is there evidence of that on their resume?
  • Has the candidate generated new revenue for other companies they’ve worked for?
  • Do the candidate’s skills, experience, and education meet the requirements of the position?
  • Is there anything unique about this candidate that would be an asset to our client’s company?

Remember the reason why companies hire recruiters to find them the best candidate for the job. They want them to screen job candidates and find the best person to fill their open position. If you don’t want your resume passed over by a recruiter or a company hiring manager, keep the bottom line in mind when you write it!

The four cornerstones that every organization seeks:
1) Quality or Effectiveness;
2) Production or Efficiency;
3) Economies or actually Saving Money;
4) Procedural Correctness or Accuracy . . .
all organizations are built upon those 4 cornerstones that are designed to achieve profit.

Suggest you blend your recent, relevant professional experience with these 4 keys to tell your story. It is what the decision-makers really want and directly relates to their true business needs. For my money, that is the bottom line.

You made some very good points, Ray. I think that #3 is often the key to getting employees to support #s 1, 2 , & 4. Quality, production, and adherence to company policies, comes from employees who feel that a company values their contributions. If companies try to "save money" by cutting salaries and benefits, they can thwart their own attempts to reach 3 out of the 4 key points you've made.

Unhappy employees will a) stay with the company and sabotage #s 1, 2, & 4, or b) they will seek out other employment opportunities. But, if all employees were happy in their current jobs, recruiters would need to find another line of work. :)
