Iraq Could Use A Few Good Logistics Management Recruiters

Logistics professionals are in high demand here in the U.S., but the need for quality logistics managers is even higher in Iraq, according to Marine Corps Maj. Gen. W.E. Gaskin. According to a report on Forbes, Gaskin told the Associated Press that he is not optimistic about Iraq’s military to be able to fix the logistics system that they’re using. Training wise, Gaskin said that a year from now, the Iraq military will be able to carry out the military operations that the American military has trained them to do.

Currently, the Iraq military forces use an antiquated system of hand written orders for materials and vehicle repair requests. The process is slow and inefficient in comparison to the automated logistic systems used by American military forces. logisticsIraq.jpgWhen an Iraqi vehicle needs a replacement part or needs to be repaired, they hire an independent contractor to handle the problem. To add to the problem of waiting for someone to get their vehicles up and running, Gaskin says that the approval process is lengthy. On the flip side, if American forces need a vehicle repaired it is handled by one or more of its own mechanics.

The report also seems to suggest that the U.S. may have contributed to the lack of logistics experts available to the new military forces of Iraq. In 2003, the US led Coalition Provisional Authority disbanded the Iraqi army taking away many of the experienced logistics experts with it who could help them streamline their logistics system now. That being the case, the Iraqi military is left basically rebuilding its logistics infrastructure from scratch. Gaskin says,”That’s why it’s such a slow pace.”

U.S. troops and advisors are trying to help Iraqi’s with the problem, but the help they are giving them is a “Band-Aid” and not a long term solution, in Gaskin’s opinion. He feels that more work is needed in building a sustained logistical base with the Iraqi military. His opinion on the progress in that regard? “It’s moving, but sometimes it’s like watching paint dry.”

Oh! Iraq is not the only one looking for logistics experts, we are too! And we have some great opportunities right now, right here in the good old U.S.A!
