Mad Marketing: iPhone price drop puts fans over the edge

Ten weeks ago, Apple fans stood in line waiting to get their hands on the latest and greatest technology offered by Apple - the iPhone (video). At $599 for an 8 gb model and $499 for a 4 gb model, the iPhone wasn’t exactly the bargain of a lifetime. Yet,  Apple says the feedback on the iPhone has been phenomenally good. In fact, Steve Jobs says it is the most popular item ever with it’s customers. Apple’s most popular item EVER! That says alot, considering the popularity of the iMac and the iPod!

Wednesday, Apple announced that they were slashing the price of the 8gb iPhone by $200. If I’d stood in line and shelled out $600 for an iPhone, I would be blogging about how I felt about the price drop now, just like so many other bloggers are now. Understandably, Apple’s iPhone owners are feeling like they got burnt by Apple and Steve Jobs was the one holding the lit match. The price cut news by Apple has already begun a wildfire of disgruntled owners blasting Apple on the Internet about the price drop announcement. iPhone owners, although they may be thrilled with the product’s features, are not thrilled with Apple’s marketing strategy to increase the sale of iPhones this Christmas.

If you one of the “lucky” ones to get your hands on one of the first iPhones, you may be able to get your $200 back. The Gizmodo blog gives some good suggestions about doing just that. I hope Apple realizes that customers won’t be rushing out to buy their latest and greatest gadgets, the next time they introduce one to the public. The move to push sales of iPhones this Christmas should not have come at their customer’s expense. What were you thinking Steve Jobs? tsk, tsk.
