MBA & Sociology Degrees but need experience - Career Advice

READER QUESTION

I am approaching the completion of my MBA in Global Management. I previously receeived a B.A. in Sociology. I am wondering, how do I begin to look for a job in my field and in entry level management? I have more than 5 years of experience but I am a non-traditional applicant for the field. Many of the jobs that are listed require that an individual have experience in the field. How do I combat this and make myself marketable?

RECRUITER’S ADVICE

eric.jpgThanks for your questions and congratulations on completing your advanced degree; it will pay off for you. Changing careers can be tough, but it is very doable. Remember, many skills that you have already attained are transferable. So, you should specifically highlight your transferable skill set in your resume or articulate it when you get an opportunity to speak with a hiring authority or recruiter.

Often times, your best shot at getting in front of the right people who will do more than judge you by your resume alone, is to network for opportunities that you will not find posted on any job board. Using your friends, acquaintances and referrals to scout out unadvertised job opportunities will be one of the best ways to get your foot into the door of new opportunities. Most job seekers use some degree of networking in their quest to find a new job…at least they should.

I would love to take a look at your resume. Hopefully this helps.

I am approaching graduation with a BA in Sociology as well. I am actually looking to go back to graduate school for business and get my MBA; I know which focus I want to do I was hoping someone could help me get a good idea of what I should do. I understand work experience is very important and I have worked my whole life. The only problem I have is right now the job market is not the greatest to say the least, so I was thinking if I am unable to find a job should I continue with grad school?
