Northeast Storm Prompts IRS to Extend Tax Deadline
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at 11:25AM If you live in the northeast, the IRS is giving you until April 19th to get your federal taxes filed without a penalty. The IRS has said that those who meet the extended deadline will not be hit with any late-filing or payment penalties.
What you need to know if you’re filing on April 19th:
- Write “Northeast Storm” in red ink, if possible, on the front of your tax form.
- Be prepared to prove that your home or the office of your accountant or tax-preparer was damaged by the storm.
- If you had a power outage, the IRS will know what cities and towns were affected - Peggy Riley, IRS spokeswoman.
Commissioner Mark W. Everson said the extension is being granted because the storm hit within 24 hours of the filing deadline. Many people were without power, telephone, and cable services that prevented them from filing by the April 17th deadline. In addition, flooding was a major problem in some areas, so if you didn’t have a boat it would have been difficult to make it to the post office by the the April 17th deadline.
Before you get too excited about the extra time you’ve gained, be aware that your state taxes may still be due today! Each state has the option of extending their own deadlines. Check your state’s website for further information.
