Salary is $1? Hmmm, Can I Think it Over?

Google’s Sergey Brin, Larry Page, and Eric Schmidt (Google’s chief executive) will take home $1 each in salary this year. This is the third year in a row that Schmidt, Page, and Brin have accepted $1 as their annual salary. Yahoo’s chief executive, Terry Semel, will take home a $1 salary this year too. Bravo to the Google and Yahoo guys for taking $1 salary again this year!

That got me wondering….why would these top level executives take $1 as a salary? Well, according to Forbes magazine, there’s no need to worry about how they’ll pay their bills this year. Brin and Page are worth about $14 billion and Schmidt is worth a mere $5 billion. And Yahoo’s Semel received $25.7 million as a bonus last year. The closest I’d get to that kind of salary would be to win the Megamillions jackpot tonight! But, come to think of it that’s only worth $370 million. Well… I could struggle by with that, I guess.

But, not everyone is willing to settle for a dollar salary this year at Google. Four of their execs will get a 200,000 increase in salary this year, which will raise their annual salary to $450,000.00; Robert Eustae, senior vp of engineering and research, Omid Kordestani, senior vp of global sales and business development, Jonathan Rosenberg, senior vp of product management, and George Reyes, Google’s CFO.

Wow! $1 as a salary? If I am worth a billion, I would probably accept that too. Or if I own Google, I wouldn't think twice accepting the dollar offer.
