Who has the World Series winning game ball? My guess is ...

“The season is over, the debris from the World Series victory parade has been swept up but one last question bedevils the Boston Red Sox…where is the ball? When Game Four against the Colorado Rockies ended on Sunday night, Boston catcher Jason Varitek gloved the final strike and tucked the ball in his pocket as the team celebrated their series win.Varitek told reporters he later handed the ball to closing pitcher Jonathan Papelbon, who hurled the final strike.

But Papelbon, the impish right-hander who won Boston fans over by doing celebratory jigs on the mound, denies any knowledge of the ball’s whereabouts. “I don’t know what happened to it,” he said. “If I did have it I wouldn’t tell anyone that I did.” - Reuters “Mystery over World Series Ball” author Scott Malone

Brett and Cole were two of 37, 730 fans at Fenway Park on Game 2 of the Series. The Red Sox took game 2 away from the Colorado Rockies by a score of 2 - 1.  No one could have been happier than Cole Stevens!

(picture - Brett’s son, Cole Stevens) Hmmm….. do you think a baseball could fit in that helmet cup? (I think the guy in the red coat and red baseball hat may be wondering that too.)  Cole’s not saying a word. He’s a huge Red Sox fan and he’s not about to tell anyone if that ice cream goes ALL THE WAY to the bottom of that Red Sox helmet cup! Hmmm….. Ok.. maybe Cole doesn’t have the winning World Series ball, but what about the owner of this site ? Where’d they get that baseball picture? hmmm…..

Actually, I happen to know that Cole has a very good alibi. He was at game 2 of the World Series in Boston, not the final game of the series. Temps that night in Boston were, well let’s just say that most people would have chosen hot chocolate over chocolate ice cream. It’s was cooooold that night! But, Cole didn’t want to miss any part of being in Red Sox Nation during a World Series game. Now, that’s the kind of fans that we like in Red Sox country!

But the Sox weren’t the only ones with fans in Boston that night. His dad says that Cole had adoring fans too, thanks to New Era caps. Cole kept getting asked “where did you get that hat”? Sorry, New Era, Cole answered them by saying “my dad got it for me”. Cole’s a smart guy, New Era. He knew who bought his ice cream and who would buy him his souvenirs!

When I asked Brett how his son if he enjoyed his trip to Boston, he said he was absolutely in awe of being in the heart of Red Sox Nation. He loved watching the Red Sox play, of course, but also he said he also like the stores, the people, the buildings, the drummer on the street and, and, and. Basically, Boston is on Cole’s top ten list of places to see and be!  I warned Brett, that he should probably expect his son to be attending college in beantown! :)  Not a bad choice, Cole. Boston is a fun place! Glad you had fun! Now be nice and give the Sox their winning ball back! (grin)
