Reuben Slone has joined Walgreens as Senior Vice President of Supply Chain Management. Reporting to President of Community Management, Mark Wagner, Slone will be responsible for distribution, transportation, systems integration and engineering, Lean and Six Sigma supply chain initiatives and community outreach.

“Reuben has deep experience in leading supply chain operations, improving service and efficiency and driving innovation in the management of inventory from distribution centers to the stores,” said Wagner. “He is a great addition to Walgreens leadership team, and we are looking forward to his insights and perspective as we continue to focus on making our distribution system more effective for both our team members and customers.”

Will we become China's junkyard?

A recent Reuters article has reported that China is leaving hundreds of containers by the rails near the Norfolk Southern Corp Portlock railyard in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Chinese are shipping so many goods to the U.S. that they are opting to utilize their cheap labor to build new containers for shipping, rather than shipping back the containers to China.

Portlock trainmaster Brian Stanley said that the containers are here to stay. The empty containers are a sign of the times as more manufacturing goes overseas. Shippers, railroads, and real estate companies are all trying to figure out how to deal with the mounting container problem.
