Will we become China's junkyard?
Sunday, May 28, 2006 at 08:11PM A recent Reuters article has reported that China is leaving hundreds of containers by the rails near the Norfolk Southern Corp Portlock railyard in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Chinese are shipping so many goods to the U.S. that they are opting to utilize their cheap labor to build new containers for shipping, rather than shipping back the containers to China.
Portlock trainmaster Brian Stanley said that the containers are here to stay. The empty containers are a sign of the times as more manufacturing goes overseas. Shippers, railroads, and real estate companies are all trying to figure out how to deal with the mounting container problem.
